Following recent
developments in the nation's steel sector, especially the
cancellation of the contractual agreement between the
Federal Government and Global Infrastructure Holdings
Limited in Ajaokuta Steel Company (ASCL) and National
Iron Ore Mining Company Limited NIOMCO) Itakpe, it
has become necessary to engage all Stakeholders in the
sector in the search for viable options of moving the
Industry forward.
Towards that end, the Ministry
is convening a National Summit on Iron and Steel at All
Seasons Multi Purpose Hall, 24 Lateef Jakande Road,
Agidingbi Ikeja, Lagos, tentatively from
31st
to
1st August,
2008, by 9.00am daily to among other things:
(a)
Discuss with Stakeholders on the way
forward in the nation's steel sector;
(b)
Collate views and options on how to handle ASCL and
NIOMCO as Government growing concern;
(c)
Obtain inputs for the development of metal regulations;
(d)
Establish a culture of dialogue between Government and Steel
Companies in Nigeria;
(e)
Secure the buy-in of Stakeholders on the activities of our
Research Agencies;
(f)
Generate information for the development of a Data bank on
metals;
(g)
Develop a roadmap for Nigeria's steel development before the
year 2020.
As a key player in the
nation's iron and steel industry, the Ministry is hereby
inviting you to participate in the Summit. The detailed
Programme if Activities for the Summit will be published
soon. Meanwhile, it will be appreciated if you could
indicate your acceptance of the invitation to us conclude
arrangements for convening the Summit.
